On June 14, 1974 , Nolan Ryan had one of his better days on the mound. Pitching the first 13 innings of a 15-inning game, he whiffed 19 batters and gave up three runs in a no-decision (the Angels would win the game 4-3) .
He would have two more 19-strikeout games before the season was over, leading the league with 367 Ks. Not to mention pitching a no-hitter on the final day of the season (with 15 more strikeouts).
And if you've ever felt bad because you struck out, take cheer. You can be glad you're not Cecil Cooper of the Red Sox. For during those 13 innings, Cooper faced Ryan six times - and struck out all six, tying a major league record in futility. So swallow your pride, and keep on swingin'!
